2020’s

2020AD – 2021AD

Here we are, in the present day, and into the second year of this decade. Not much has changed, trend wise, from the end of the last decade, maybe due to the COVID-19 World pandemic that everyone has had to deal with. So now “maskne” and stressed out skin is a “thing”…

Skincare:

With the skincare boom continuing on from the previous decade, many people are spending their money on luxury skincare products instead of make-up. Vegan and eco-friendly beauty is on the rise, including CBD infused products. Aromatherapy products are set to become a big thing once again this decade, such as mood enhancers and inhalable supplements.

Make-up:

Most people have been working from home, and social lives put on hold over the beginning of the 2020’s. Make-up hasn’t been a priority and just put on for the odd ‘Zoom’ video call, or applied as an act of self-care to remember “normal life”.

Social media has helped lots of people to embrace their true skin, including blemishes, acne, scaring and hypo/hyperpigmentation. With some people skipping foundation and just using eye and lip make-up instead.

In general, everyone wants to look fresh and dewy, with skin-like multi-tasking foundation. Brands realise that consumers want their make-up to be good for their skin too, technology has moved along so now lots of make-up brands consider their make-up lines to work with skincare. Whether it is anti-aging or hydrating, foundations now create very natural lightweight finishes, with buildable coverage.

Highlighter is still used, however not as heavy handed as in the 2010’s. It is used to create a soft, healthy glow to the skin, also a trend of “glass skin”, to make the skin shine like it’s made from glass.

Minimalist make-up looks, such as a coat of mascara and a bold lip are predicted to be popular. A bright colour on the eyelids, to bring a sense of fun back to make-up, can be worn.

Another eye make-up look in style is smouldering eyeliner with kohl and blended out into a flick.

Natural looking eyebrows with a strong arch and a few strays are in trend with the ‘no make-up make-up’ trend.

Due to everyone having to wear masks, lips haven’t been seen yet! Nude shades are on trend, along with lip stains in berry colours, which stay on even after wearing a mask. When lips can once again be shown, they will be painted with a mix of bright and bold shades.

Hair:

Hair is becoming more individual, with people embracing their natural textures, stepping out of the box with colours and styles and the bringing back old styles with modern twists.

The shag cut is back and highly fashionable, along with the mullet! Both are slightly different from the 1970’s and 80’s, with being a bit softer and ‘lived-in’.

A 1970’s curtain fringe is all the rage, finished with a loose wave, with not as much volume as back then.

As well as chilled looks, precision cuts such as blunt bobs will reappear, along with the pixie cut.

1960’s inspired up-dos will be fashionable, with a lot less structure and a lot more flow for an effortless effect.
